Survivors of Violent Loss Program Will   NOT Close!!!!

December 14 marked the day SVLP received an  email that said the program would continue under new management with support and training from the current team.  A new Board has been elected and will be in place January 1, 2012.  The current SVLP office will close and the current Board will resign effective December 31. 

Be assured that the phone number ( 619-685-0005) or our email: svlp@svlp.org  is still how to reach the program for services.   Laura Carr, will ensure that services will continue for those who have lost a loved one to murder or another violent loss.  Michelle Illiff will continue as a clinician onsite at the new office location at 2333 First Ave., Suite 204, San Diego, CA 92101.

Two new teams have emerged  from this “close call”.

 ”Friends of Survivors of Violent Loss.  An all volunteer team comprised of those committed to continue collaboration with other agencies and to ensure SVLP’s annual events continue. Those include participation at VACC’s Candlelight Tribute, Crime Stoppers “Light the Night Against Crime”, River of Remembrance at the Crime Victims Oak Garden and the Holiday Memorial.  Email us if you want to consider volunteering here. 

Violent Loss Resources: committed to providing free training and support to other nonprofit agencies to provide services or do groups for their members/clients.  Different levels of training will be provided to include: peer led time limited support groups, criminal death support group and  restorative retelling training for clinicians. Email or contact us to sign up or inquire about more information. 

Many of you have let us know how important this program has been for you.  I hope you will be pleased to hear this news.  The challenge continues still.  SVLP needs your time, talent or money  to continue to be a service for San Diego and not visit this crisis again.

TRIGGERS!!!

We have heard from many of you during this time of heightened news pertaining to both Chelsea King and  Amber Dubois that you too have been “triggered” with reliving memories and emotions  of your own loss(es) or that of someone you know as well. 

Not only do I also re-live the loss of my sister who was 17 when she was murdered, but I am also “triggered” by so many of you who’s stories I know and  worked with at the Survivors of Violent Loss Program.  My sister “Tiny” was walking alone one December morning.   Both of these girls were walking/running  alone- in daylight too. Tiny did her usual ten minute walk  to catch her ride  beauty school in Portland, Maine.  

We would like to hear from you on “triggers” you have had.  This will help you hear from others and know  you are not alone. Having “triggers” ( memories, emotions) is normal and may occur when both clear and unknown reminders occur like learning of the deaths of these young girls.
